Amerie Nose Job: Did It Send The Right Message?

Plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments are fast becoming a growing phenomenon, especially among young women. Botox treatments are being performed before a person even has the slightest wrinkle and people are drastically changing their appearances from a breast augmentation to nose reduction surgeries to better their appearance, when it wasn’t bad to begin with. This could not be truer than with the recent rumor going around of performer Amerie. This one of a kind beauty was gorgeous to begin with. Sure, her nose had a bit of a “flare” at the bottom, but once she had her Amerie nose job, her career took off and landed her as one of the top African American singers of today. However, the point begs to speak; what type of message are we sending to young girls today who think that the only way to get ahead in this world is if you look the right way?

More and more African American women who are in the public spot light (from singers to actresses) are getting their looks modified to better their careers. Most do it indiscreetly and in such a subtle way that leaves some people wondering, “Did she or didn’t she?” However, when you put a before and after photograph next to one another, you can certainly tell the change. In the cases of nose reduction surgeries, singers Patty LaBelle and Kelly Rowland and actress Vivica A. Fox have all had Rhinoplasty surgeries done to give their noses a slimmer appearance. It is rumored that former Destiny’s Child singer Beyonce also went through a nose reduction surgery as well as breast augmentation. With the nose reduction of singer Amerie, it was not a subtle reduction. While her appearance did improve drastically, she resembles nothing of herself pre-surgery.

Breast augmentations are also done on a recurring basis to women in the public eye. Of course, most don’t include breast reduction surgery. Generally women are after breast augmentations where the motto stands true of “the bigger the better”. Unfortunately, for women in the public eye, young women follow by example and if they see their favorite movie stars and singers changing their appearance because they feel their careers will take off or they will be “sexier” by doing it, it is sending the wrong message to young girls. The Amerie nose job was just the beginning. Be happy and pleased with who you are. Don’t change your appearance because that is what makes you…you.
